Different candles are made from different kinds of candle making wax. One of those waxes is paraffin and another type of wax is natural wax like bees wax. Soy, palm and bayberry are also natural types of wax that are used in candle making.
Sometimes candle makers will mix different types of waxes to make their own specific blend of wax.
The wax most used in candle making is paraffin. Paraffin is made from petroleum that has been through the refining process. This permits the wax to stay firm and solid at room temperature. This type of wax is naturally white and it does not have any scent and these things have to be added to the paraffin to make it look attractive.
The melting point of paraffin is low, only 120 up to 160 degrees F. If the temperature gets any higher the paraffin will burn and may catch on fire. The reason the melting point is so different is because different types of candles are made with different melting points. Tapers are made using the 160 degree melting point while jar candles can be made with the lower melting point of 120 degrees.
One of the first candles produced was probably made of bees wax. There are several other types of natural wax including palm base and vegetable waxes. Another one is soy wax. The definition of a natural wax is one that comes from a source that is renewable. Bees wax is renewable because bees are always making wax and others are palm and bayberry. There are also animal waxes included in the natural wax category but animals are not harmed in order to obtain it. Lanolin is a natural wax and comes from wool grease.
Bees wax comes in yellow and white and the most popular is the yellow because of its ease in making candles. Bees wax candles can be scented but this is not a necessity since they already smell very lovely from the flowers that went into making the wax. Bees wax is very expensive but it makes such lovely candles it is used often.
Another natural wax is soy which is very sought after today. There is no comparison to soy and paraffin because soy is used totally different so be sure to follow any directions that comes with this wax. Soy wax burns longer than other waxes making soy candles last a little longer. Soy wax will take a long time to cool so be very patient. Soy takes very well to scents that are added to the wax and the scent will be very profound. Soy wax can be used in pillar candles, votive candles and in candles that are in containers such as jars or tins. This wax dries to a very glossy sheen.
Gel candles have been popular in the recent past. Mineral oils are mixed with a resin to make the stiff clear gel. It comes in three different densities and a lower temperature melts the lower density gel. It is important to follow directions that come with the gel wax. Gel candles were taken off the market a few years ago because they were exploding and sending the wax into individual’s hair and face and giving them some nasty burns.
You can find all types of waxes in a craft or a hobby store. In order to deal with wax safely be sure to follow directions until you understand the dangers this wax can hold. Keep the equipment that you make candles in separate from the cooking pans in your kitchen. If you try to make candles in a pan you have cooked in your candles are not going to come out very well. Make sure to experiment with all the different waxes so you make all kinds of candles.
