Knowing how to choose the right wax for your project and picking a fragrance you enjoy is an important part of the candle making process.
But it’s equally important to follow through on your hard work and make sure that your preparation is valued by presenting your candle in a way that your family and friends can appreciate – and may even be surprised to find made by your very hands.
It can be tempting at the end of a difficult project, especially when you are new to a hobby, to just hand it off and say that you’re done. But home made candles are about warmth and hospitality and attachment so let your presentation carry these feelings over to the person who will receive the candle.
If the candle is a gift, you have likely thought about the recipient as you have chosen the project. Will they enjoy this type of candle and the color and the fragrance. Now think about whether they will enjoy the presentation.
Do they enjoy classic surrounds and have you created a container candle for them? If so, an apothecary jar would present nicely. Or perhaps you’ve made a set of pillar candles. In this case nestling them together carefully and tying a wide ribbon to secure them together would be an attractive presentation. Or maybe your gift is for someone who is nicely sophisticated and your candle is scented with a gentle perfume for their bedroom or living room.
In that case a hexagonal jar with it’s crisp, clean edge would show off your candle very nicely and fit in with the recipient’s decor.
There are so many choices when it comes to types of containers, jars, cups and other items in which you can present your home made candles that truly your own imagination is the only thing holding you back. Challenge yourself to look at items around the house and throughout your day in a new way. Think what it would look like with a candle inside it. If it’s not sturdy enough to be a container think if it could be used to accentuate your projects or maybe it could be used for wrapping or a mold.
A wonderfully cute gift that many people like to give are candle tarts. These small, scented wax molds are melted in a reservoir on top of a warmer. Warmers can be heated by tealight or electricity.
The electric warmers are essentially a small bowl on top of a hot plate. The tealight warmer is a small bowl over top of a tea light. Both have a passing resemblance to a fondue pot but on a smaller scale. Tarts are popular because they afford people the opportunity to enjoy candle scent without worrying about an open flame.
Often tarts look like they were made from leftover wax that was poured into a muffin liner, and in fact that is a great way to made tarts. It offers the home candle maker a way to use leftover wax and creates a sophisticated homemade project. Occasionally, you will also see scoopable scented wax that be melted in the warmers.
This type of wax is also popular because you can control how much wax you choose to use at a time. Tarts do not have a wick and are not technically a candle but are made of wax and because this project is absolutely you’re own you can feel free to make the tarts look like anything you want.
If you find a mold that you enjoy and want your tarts to appear more whimsical or sophisticated or seasonal it is entirely up to you.
Wrapping your candle tarts up in a sachet bag or a cellophane bag tied with ribbon reminds the recipient that the candles that you made are special and made just for them.
If you are thinking of moving from home candle making as a hobby to a small business then you will definitely need to think about presentation and wrapping and how each makes a difference in that sale and future sales.
