Using blue candles successfully can sometimes be a little tricky, and you need to choose the setting and the timing carefully.
For instance, blue candles at a dinner party are probably not a good idea.
Chefs and restaurant operators will tell you that blue does not go well with food (blue is believed to suppress the appetite), while designers will also tell you that blue can “slow the pulse rate and lower body temperature” – which when combined with a reduced appetite is not exactly what you want to happen at your next evening get-together.
On the other hand, lowering the temperature may be just what you’re after in summer, which is one reason that blue candles tend to be strongly linked both to place and to the seasons.
Blue is the color of the sea and the sky, so is an absolute natural when temperatures rise. It is also a color strongly associated with the Mediterranean and Greece in particular, so it is easy to evoke a celebratory mood with a few relatively simple accessories – perhaps those you brought back from a holiday in the area?
Blue and white also evoke the sea and relaxation – and what better for an evening al fresco meal? If you’re lucky enough to have an outdoor pool and dining areas, dark blues and purples will add a sense of mystery and intrigue to the dinner table, particularly if the only illumination is a scattering of flickering lights.
Lavenders and purples are also good when you want to make something of a statement. Purple is associated with luxury and wealth, and goes particularly well with the darker silver color of pewter accessories or tin lanterns, for instance.
Blue also goes well with glass candle holders; one idea is to surround blue candles in tall glass candle holders with smaller tea-lights. The tea-lights will probably be silvery in color and will set off the blue candles and glassware, but you might also be able to find some complementary colors to help you create the right atmosphere.
That doesn’t mean that blue candles can’t be used successfully during the colder months. They combine well with silvery (or silver-sprayed) accessories and materials, and make an interesting alternative to the more traditional reds and greens of the winter months.
If you want to set a more vibrant note, consider combining blue with more lively colors such as red and yellow.
Used carefully, blue candles can evoke a wide range of emotions, from cool and conservative to summery and relaxing.
